Letter from our Chairman - January 2018

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to our 71st year! This is the first newsletter since I was elected your Chair at the October 2017 AGM and my first chance to thank my predecessor, Denise F for the gentle but firm and enthusiastic way she conducted her year in office. I am sure you will all join me in wishing Denise a speedy recovery to full health and look forward to her reappearing on our walks as soon as she is able.

2017 ended on a really high note with the marking of our 70th anniversary being picked up by BBC local radio and celebrated in style at our Annual Christmas Dinner: the cutting of a specially-decorated cake and the first rendering of what might well become the Dorset Ramblers anthem. Thanks again to our energetic member Angie for making all the arrangements at the Dorset Golf and Country Club for the third consecutive year and to member Jenny P and her amazing thespians for rounding everything off with a hilarious mini-pantomime.

My thanks also go to last year’s Committee for yet another fantastic and varied programme, including the re-introduction of some mid-week walking by tackling the Wessex Ridgeway in a number of stages. Congratulations to all who took part but particularly those who completed all seven stages.

Your current Committee has already had two meetings as we look to fit ourselves for the next decade and the foreseeable future beyond. There are some boringly necessary constitutional and financial management issues to tidy up. However our principal focus will be on continuing the drive for new members and encouraging more to come forward as walk leaders. Good to note that this is already happening. Thanks to all who have led in 2017 or on the current programme. We cannot sustain a full and varied programme if that burden falls on too few of the Group. Rosie J. does a sterling job in getting our programme together. We could all help make her job of Walks Secretary somewhat easier.

I must give due credit to three members of the Committee without whom the wheels would not go round; the experience and local knowledge of Jo C. whose links to HF has led to enjoyable group holidays at home and abroad, James E. our Treasurer whose diligence keeps our books in order and last but not least our indefatigable, inspirational Secretary, Jenny N. without whom ……….................! I end on a mercenary note. Subs are now due!!

I look forward to chatting with you on our many and varied walks in 2018. Let’s enjoy this wonderful County of ours, coast and countryside, in each other’s amiable company.

David S., Chairman
