Summer Outing - Kelmscott Manor Thursday 7 June 2018

Advance notice /priority for DR members.

Kelmscott Manor was the inspirational Cotswold retreat of William Morris and his family, friends and colleagues. When Morris first saw the Manor in 1871, he was delighted by this 'loveliest haunt of ancient peace'; he signed a joint lease for the property with his friend and colleague Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the Pre-Raphaelite artist. Kelmscott Manor is located along the Thames in the picturesque village of Kelmscott, which is approximately 3 miles from Lechlade on the edge of the Cotswolds. You can read much more detailed information about the beautiful house and garden on their website https://www.sal.org.uk/kelmscott-manor Group visits are only possible on a Thursday. As I am sure you are aware, it has become expensive and risky to book coaches for these day long trips and we can find ourselves out of pocket and hunting around for ‘takers’ in the final weeks before the outing. This year is different! I now have 60+ people in my U3A art talks groups who will, I know, wish to take advantage of this opportunity. So I am giving you advanced warning, until 20 November, after which I will start to take bookings from my groups. The cost is likely to be £14.50 for an introductory talk and freeflow tour of house, plus coach which will bring total cost of house plus coach to approx £28. Lunches will be at the excellent licensed Tea Rooms. We would hope to explore the village after lunch and perhaps even walk along the Thames path to Lechlade. Please complete slip with newsletter and give / send to Jenny N by 20 Nov. A deposit will be requested in January.

N.B. as this summer outing is primarily a house and garden visit, we will probably organise another day – most likely a Sunday – for a walk outside our usual area.
