A Letter from our Chairman

Well, in spite of a mild if dreary winter, we seem to have had a late spell of the cold stuff.. Thankfully that looks as if it might be over and better things to come. So, I hope you are all looking forward to some lovely walking weather and super walks to take part in.

Numbers on the walks have been well up during the winter with an average of 17 since January. This is really good news for the club. Somewhat less good news is the difficulty of finding someone willing to take on the leading of these walks and the responsibility is falling too much on to the same people every programme. In fact some may be taking on a second lead within the same programme for this June to September one. This is not an ideal situation and yet again I would ask you all to think quite seriously about volunteering to help here. You enjoy the walks so come on – help us to maintain this facility for yourselves and the rest of the membership.

In contrast to the healthy numbers attending our walks, the number of club members has sadly fallen. This is not entirely down to us as there are many clubs in Dorset and others are suffering in the same way. Nevertheless Dorset Ramblers (not a Ramblers Association Group) affiliated to the RA has been in existence known since 1946 and the small beginnings were showing earlier than that. We celebrated 60 years back in 2008 I believe. It would be really sad if the combination of falling numbers and difficulties in keeping a good programme of walks filled should lead to the folding of this group. Those of us in it feel it to be such a friendly group with a nice associated social side together with the holiday element both abroad and in UK. Please think hard about this.

Turning to holidays, the recent trip to Mallorca was a great success I hear. The weather was cloudy but warm and no wind, ideal conditions for walking. The terrain was rugged both underfoot, being stony, and of course a hilly region for walks being the Sierra de Tramuntana in the north of Mallorca. Nevertheless it was hugely enjoyable with great views. And for those who found the walking too demanding, the bus was available to get to other places and do their own thing in a small group. A big incentive to make the downward trip on foot to Port de Soller was the local orange ice cream, a winner I believe! I hope some of you will have some photos to put on the web site for us all to see.

The next social event is the social with quizzes at the Drax Arms at Bere Regis on Sat.21st May. A brief reminder that the car park for the pub is just past it on the same side of road.

Between the above and the AGM are several other events mentioned below. With reference to the AGM, there are going to be vacancies on the committee and the nomination slips with this letter need your attention. The most urgent post is for a WALKS PROGRAMME SECRETARY and then The Chairman’s post. Please pay attention to this and talk to each other and see if you can come up with nominations (with the agreement of the person concerned) to fill these vacancies. If we get several so much the better and we shall vote on it.
