January Newsletter

Happy New Year to you all and all the best for 2016 with plenty of great walks ahead.

I do hope none of you have been adversely affected, either yourselves or your families in other parts of UK, by the dreadful floods in some areas. Here in the south we seem to have been very lucky.

Attendance on the walks has been really good throughout the autumn and this is most encouraging for the club to continue to flourish. Areas covered have been very varied and interesting so keep coming!

Since my last newsletter, we have had the AGM at which we reluctantly received the resignation of Joyce as Programme Secretary but welcomed Sandra as our new secretary to assist Pam. I would ask all walk leaders to make Sandra’s and Pam’s task as easy as possible by submitting details of walks in good time for the compilation of the programmes, thereby saving them from the need to make a lot of phone calls to pick up these details. Incidentally these details need not be over descriptive but have the approximate mileage and some indications of the terrain, hilly or relatively flat and many stiles or not etc. This information is only to give prospective walkers an idea if the walk will be within their capabilities. At this AGM Jo C was elected as a new committee member. Also at AGM the decision was made to raise the annual subscription to £8.50 in anticipation of higher expenses when our super efficient Secretary, Jenny N retires from her teaching job at Sherborne Girl’s School in the summer. We ended the afternoon with a most interesting presentation by Tony Flux, advisor to the NT Marine and Coastal Department on “Caring for the Coast… the next 100 years”.

Also since last letter there was the Christmas Dinner at Dorset Golf and Country Club. Although I was not present I have had a wonderful report of how good it was and how everyone there enjoyed it so much. That is splendid news and of course big thanks to Angie for opening up this opportunity for DR. To be repeated maybe Angie?

During the late summer into autumn we have not had much in the way of social activity except for the Christmas Dinner mentioned above. The venue at the golf club, put our way by Angie, seems like a really good place**. Future plans for the spring and summer, include a social event at the Drax Arms on Saturday 21 May which John A is developing and then a Summer Outing to the Heddon Valley on 12 June. An HF holiday in Majorca is already planned and prepared for April 23-30. A bit more detail to follow in our social item

**stop press – since Jenny G left for Spain and on our recent walk in Hinton St. Mary Angie and Rita offered to lead a walk for us on Easter Sunday from the Dorset Golf and Country Club.
